| Recommended Brewing Method Place 1 gallon of water into the brew kettle. If you are using malted grains, place them in a steeping bag and add to the kettle. Bring the water to a boil and remember to remove the grain bag just prior to the boiling point. Place the finishing hops into a steeping bag and add them to the kettle. Add the additional malt extract and stir until the liquid returns to a boil. Turn off the heat and stir in the hopped malt extract. Keep stirring to ensure the syrup is fully dissolved. Add one gallon of cold water to the kettle. Pour remaining water into your primary fermenter then add the cooled wort. Pitch yeast when temperature is between 70 and 80 degrees. Ferment and bottle using your usual methods. |
Using Hopped Malt Beer Kits
One hopped beer kit and two pounds of dry malt will result in a finished beer of low to medium strength with good body. Adding more dry malt (up to three pounds total) will increase alcohol strength, accent malt character and produce richer body. Dry malt extract (DME) is an excellent choice for 60% to 100% of the additional sugar required to reach your original gravity target. If you like strong bitter character you may opt to use more hops. Remember that the beer kit is already bittered at a ratio of one pound of malt to five gallons of water. Using more than two pounds of additional sugar will reduce the perceived bitterness of the finished beer.
When selecting finishing hops, seek out the aroma which suits your palette. Keep in mind that just like salt in cooking, over hopping is almost impossible to repair. Choose hops with alpha acid ratings of less the 5% and try mixing different varieties. It is not necessary to use a full ounce. Finishing hops, added to the boiling wort for 15 minutes or less, become the signature of your brew. You don’t have to add them all a once or even to boil them at all. Steeping one half to one ounce for one or two minutes after the boil will add distinct aroma without adding much flavor or any bitterness.
Coopers Australian Beer Kits
Coopers beer kits are produced by an actual brewery. Coopers homebrew extracts are derived from two-row barley and wheat and are hopped using Tasmanian Pride of Ringwood hops. The grains are grown and processed in South Australia by the Adelaide Malting Company.
Muntons English Beer Kits
Muntons Beer Kits are made entirely from 100% hopped malt extract with no inferior adjuncts such as barley syrup. There is one notable exception to this however - the American Style Light Beer. To emulate the light delicate character of this popular beer style it was necessary to include in the kit a percentage of liquid sugar. This is the only beer kit in the extensive Muntons ranges made from anything other than 100% hopped malt extract.
