Empty beer bottles should be cleaned right after use and stored upside down in the case. This will prevent insects from setting up housekeeping in them. Inspect bottles for signs of cracks or flaws. The yeast in the beer is going to continue to ferment and in the closed bottle the carbon dioxide will have no way to escape. If a faulty or unsound bottle is used you will run the risk of an exploding bottle. If you think the condition of a bottle is in question, throw it away!

Beer Bottling Aids
COOPERS CARBONATION DROPS 60 drops per pack $4.50
To carbonate home brew simply add one drop to each bottle prior to filling. Fill bottle to within 1-2" of the top and cap as normal. Store at fermentation temperature and your beer will be fully carbonated within 5 days. When making diet root beer or hard ciders use 2 drops per 12, 16 oz. bottles and 3 per 22 oz. bottles.

The bottling bucket is fitted with a flow valve that allows beer to flow freely from the pail into the bottle. The bucket also serves as a mixing tank for the priming sugar. Faster filling with less air. Bottling wands are rigid tubes, open at one end and fitted with a automatic on-off valve at the other end. The bottling wand allows a bottle to be filled with a minimum of air being introduced to the wine or beer. The wand also acts as a fill meter to make sure each bottle has the correct head room. The amount of head space in the bottle will influence the carbonation of beer or sparkling wines.

Bottle Caps
Bottle caps cannot be reused. Count out about 55 caps for a five gallon batch of beer, using 12 oz. bottles, and rinse them with hot water. Place the caps in a solution of sanitizer and let them sit till you bottle the beer.
