Laboratory & Testing Equipment

These are the laboratory tools all winemakers, homebrewers and cheesemakers need to test and measure those characteristics which are critical to attaining the desired results. There is no better way to assure your success than to monitor the progress of whatever you are making.

Inaccuracies in measurements and weights can spell disaster. The quality of the instruments you use will directly affect your results.

Hydrometer Dual Purpose $6.30

Scale ranges from 1.100 to 0.990 at 60 degrees F.

Used for both beer and wine. US made triple scale reads specific gravity, potential alcohol and balling. It is stored in a clear plastic tube with instructions.

The hydrometer is an essential piece of test equipment used in making wine and beer. It is made of blown glass with a weighted, bulbous bottom and a long narrow stem. The hydrometer is designed to float in liquid with the bulbous end down. A reading is taken matching a scale (contained in the stem) with the surface of the liquid being measured. A Triple Scale or Dual Purpose Hydrometer refers to one with the three different measuring scales within the hydrometers stem. Two of the scales are called specific gravity and Balling (Brix) scale. Both represent a measurement of liquid density relative to water. The third scale measures potential alcohol. Ordinary water, at 60° F has a specific gravity of 1.000. Taking a hydrometer reading before yeast is added to the must (juice prepared for fermentation into wine) or wort (unfermented beer) will tell you what the original gravity is and what the maximum potential alcohol could be. Once yeast is added and fermentation is underway, periodic readings will track the extent of fermentation. Eventually your reading will remain constant over a two day period indicating that the sugar fermentation is complete. This will take days for beer and weeks for wine. Note that the end of sugar fermentation is not an indication that the wine is ready

Erlenmeyer Flask 1000 ml. $13.55
Erlenmeyer Flask 2000 ml. $19.05

Hydrometer Jar Glass 12 in. $5.95

Hydrometer Jar Plastic 10 in. $2.95
Hydrometer Jar Plastic 14 in. $3.95

pH Meter Checker-1 $69.95

includes two buffers & storage solutions

This simple meter provides fast and accurate pH measurement. Uses replaceable pH electrode and works for 1,000 hours before changing batteries

Hydrometer Proof & Tralle $6.95

This unit measures the approximate alcohol in distilled spirits. It measures up to 100 proof.

Hydrometer Thermo $13.95

This combination thermometer and hydrometer gives more accurate gravity readings through temperature correction. It shows gravity readings in specific gravity, potential alcohol and balling, at 60°F. The thermometer is for temperature correction only and not for general use. It comes with a storage case.

Wine Thief Fermtech $7.95

Simply dip once for a quick sample. The unique design allows you to insert a standard hydrometer directly into the 19 inches long thief. Just touch the tip to the rim to empty the wine thief. It is made of high grade acrylic for excellent clarity.

Refractometer $88.95

Used for testing grapes in the field (comes with a handled cover) to determine if they are ready to be picked. This model is appropriate for use with juice and covers a sugar range of 0 to 32% sucrose in 0.2% graduations. This temperature compensated model will give accurate readings at any temperature. It also be used in brewing, it only takes a couple drops to get a reading. Readings are usually in Brix, but with some simple math, it can be converted to SG easily. To convert this brix reading to specific gravity, simply multiply by 4. Example: If your reading is 10 brix and you multiply by 4, you get 40. This means your wort is 1.040.

Thermometer Adhesive $2.25

Adhesive backing allows you to attach this instrument to the outside of a plastic or glass fermenter and monitor the inside temperature in 2 degree increments. Ale and lager fermentation ranges are clearly marked. It has a temperature range of 40 to 80 degrees F.

Thermometer Digital $19.95

When speed and accuracy are paramount, this fast reading, digital thermometer is perfect for homebrewing, winemaking, cheese making, cooking and smoking. A large clear digital display gives readings between -58° to 392°F. Includes a 4¾ inch stainless steel probe with protective tip cover, maximum minimum memory function, and data hold function. Sampling time is only one second.

Thermometer Floating $5.95

This 11.5 inch long glass thermometer is weighted in one end so that it will float. It works well and is accurate but the thin glass is easily broken. It is best used for light duty and with care. It is packed in storage tube and has a temperature range of 0-220° F or 0-115° C.

Thermometer Large Dial $12.45

This thermometer is popular with homebrewers and backyard cooks alike. The 1-3/4 inch easy to read dial ranges from 0° to 220° F. Twelve inch probe makes taking readings easy. It includes a clip which suspends probe into pot. It is made of stainless steel and is excellent for mashing, brewing, cheese making, smoking meats.

Thermometer Small Dial $5.95

This measuring instrument is manufactured with superior materials and workmanship ensuring consistent, optimal performance. Stainless steel 6 inch probe with 1 inch dial face, quick response, instantly reads the temperature for meat, fish and poultry. This thermometer is ideal for small scale cheese making. Range: 32° to 220° F. It includes a sleeve with clip and temperature guide.
